Make Yourself

Up until a few weeks ago I was in a book club.
While I am am avid reader and a lover of drinking wine in a group of women, I was really not enjoying my book club. The book choices were always poorly timed for me, like a depressing non-fiction when I was craving an uplifting novel. The meetings felt forced and uncomfortable with too many conflicting ideas and political views inflicted on the books meaning. But still, I did enjoy the community that came along with the book club, the hour and a half we would always spend just talking before being corralled into a circle to discuss the book. This got me thinking, what would I enjoy doing as a "club"?
and then it came to me...
I want to be part of a group of people who share their creative ideas rather than pretentious literary insights. After all isn't my love of learning and sharing what I'm doing here in blogland?  DIY-ing is in my bones and drives much of what I do.Why then couldn't I translate a similar dynamic into a once monthly gathering in my own community?
Beginning this month I'd like to introduce my newest hair-brained scheme...
Currently I have a few very crafty people in mind to help me get it off the ground. I can't wait to tell you more about it, I wish you all lived closer so you too could join!

Peace & putty knives!

Lenae's Blogged Baby shower {Day Three}

Hello again, and once again thank you to everyone for participating in the game yesterday. If you are just joining us you can still hop back a few posts and add your entry for silliest mad lib. I have to say that all the entries so far have been a crack up to read, and to H-mama it is very kind of you to only guess 1 square! : )

Now it is time for the gifts, and Cake!
If you have read much of the rest of my blog you have probably noticed I sorta am obsessed with love baking! Let me just tell you, if there was anyway I could have safely mailed every one of you a big honkin' slice of cake, I would have!

But at least Lenae, her boys, and Ms.Quinn all got to have some!
...

Now on to the gifts!
Lenae was so kind to send me pictures of the beautiful gifts from everyone

nobody beats a blankie made by a gramma!

this tutu is too cute!

I think it's safe to say Emily is our farthest guest!

Love the face Lenae!
...
"And now a word from our guest of honor"
*said in my best announcer voice, which is still pretty poor*

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the sweet gifts!  I love each and every one!" -Lenae

I too would like to thank everyone for dropping by my little ol' blog for the past few days. I hope you all stop back by again sometime! It seems to me that Lenae and her family are loved by many people, and Quinn is a lucky girl to be coming into such a fantastic family. I know we will get to see lots of her and her big brothers in Lenae's blog very soon.
...
Now for the winners!

First of all, all of the mad libs were hilarious! So funny in fact that I couldn't decide, so I left it up to Lenae to pick her favorite, and she said...
" I think Lucy the Valiant should win the Mad Lib challenge, considering that even my hubby was laughing out loud while reading hers :)"

Secondly, I hope you all enjoyed wrapping yourselves in T.P., I know I did! All of you were so kind and really pretty close in your guesses. According to Lenae, she is 12 squares around which means that we have 2 winners!
Katie @Bliss and That and Ginger
And since you were very close at guessing 12 &1/2 squares we are going to say that Valerie is also a winner!

If all four of you would be so kind to email me you address, I'll pop your prizes in the mail right away! Which may or may not be my very favorite chocolaty treat...*hint, hint*

I hope you all have a beautiful day!

Lenae I know we will all be sending you peaceful happy thoughts for the coming weeks, good luck sweetie!

Peace of cake!

Lenae's Blogged Baby shower {Day Two}

Welcome Back!
Thank you to everyone that participated yesterday, and if you didn't get a chance you still have until tomorrow to add your mad lib to the link party.
Today I thought it would be fun to have Lenae answer a few questions.  This is always my favorite part of baby showers, well that and that delicious lime sherbet punch that is always at baby showers. Oh look I whipped up a batch just for you...
So scoop yourself a cup and settle in, be sure to get a chunk of sherbet, it's the best part!

> 1. How did you decide on Quinn's name?
I'm pretty sure we saw it on a baby name list online, and we liked it right away.  To us it's unique, classic, strong, and feminine all at the same time.

> 2. What are you most eagerly anticipating about having a girl?
I'm excited to do this motherhood thing and be able to impart to a little girl some of my thoughts on femininity and how it relates to life.  It'll be interesting having a "mini-me" :)

> 3. What things are Ben and the boys anticipating about having another girl in the house?
Ben is already strategizing how to hide her from the male population outside our family.  The boys are simply excited to see another baby!

> 4. what do you like the most about pregnancy?
Feeling the baby move and kick has always been the most magical part for me.

> 5. what do you like the least about pregnancy?
Sciatic nerve pain!  Ouch.  And my first trimester morning sickness is pretty brutal.

> 6. What does Ben like the most about your pregnancies?
He's really enjoyed being present at the ultrasounds.  Seeing the baby makes it a lot more real for him.

> 7. What does Ben least enjoy about your pregnancies?
Certainly not all my whining :)

> 8. How is this Pregnancy different from the others, besides the fact
that you are doing it while chasing 3 boys?
So far my tummy has been much smaller than it was with the boys.  And -obviously- I'll have spent half of this pregnancy in Washington, D.C. while all my others were in Georgia.

> 9. What day do you think she will be born on?
No idea why we think this -because all our boys were born the week of their due dates- but we're predicting she's a day or two late!  I'll say the 26th.

> 10. Just an extra interesting fact from me (Lenae):
I think it's neat that Quinn will be born at a Naval Hospital (the National Naval Medical Center) because I was also born in one -- the Oakland Naval Hospital.  (My dad was an active-duty Marine at the time.) :)
Thanks for sharing Lenae!

Now, who's ready for another game? I want to know just how small that belly is...

Belly Guess Game

I am sure everyone has played this game at least once but since we are doing it online I'll explain how we are going to play.

1. Go to your bathroom and get a roll of toilet paper.

2. Roll out a strip of squares you think is the same circumference as Lenae's belly. Remember to leave the T.P. in one long ribbon and not to rip the squares individually.

3. Count the squares and leave your guess in the comment area below.

If you are like me you will have to tell your husband/partner/roommate/relative exactly what you are doing, at which point they will roll their eyes and walk away, like mine did. But that's okay it is a pretty good laugh.

See you tomorrow for the last day of festivities!
I will be announcing the winners of the games tomorrow so be sure to check back to see if it's you

Punch recipe and photo from here

Peace have another cup of  sherbet punch!

Lenae's Blogged Baby Shower {Day One}

Welcome, and thank you for stopping by! As I already mentioned my blog will be all baby socks, teeny tiny diapers, and labor stories this weekend as we celebrate Lenae and Ben's newest and girliest addition.

I have chosen to spend 3 full days showering Lenae with love and happiness because honestly that's just what she deserves. Lenae is an amazing mother, wife, crafter, writer, and friend. She sews amazing things like this, this and this. Her blog gives me daily inspiration and encouragement to be a better mom, wife and all around person.
Here is the beautiful Lenae, almost there!

Here are the proud parents in front of their beautiful home, nice digs right?
Just kidding, but they do live in the same town, practically neighbors I'd say...

Here are the very proud big brothers...

...and here is the star of the show!

now grab a few of these and let's get started

As with any baby shower I think we should all get to know each other better,
so let's introduce ourselves and then play a game shall we?

First, tell us all about yourself and how you met Leane and her family by writing your own post and joining the link party below. If all that seems too much then simply leave it in the comment space below.

Now for the game, Who dosen't love a Mad-Lib?

Because I'm really not that skilled with technology I'm going to make you do this the old fashioned way, sorry.
Copy and paste the game into your own post about how you met Lenae, then add your post to the link below. You may also do them separately in 2 posts if you'd like.

Let's Roll

"Hi, my name is Merrilee and I'm addicted to rich full bodied colors." I say standing in the company of others with paint on their knuckles and splatter in their hair.
"Hi Merrilee!" says the rest of the group from their circle of chairs...

This is the scene that plays out in my head every time I'm driving home form the hardware store with the newest member of my color collection and it's complementary shiny can opener with ACE emblazoned on it's handle. There must be at least 50 of those can openers in my junk drawer, and in my paint supplies box, and in the center console of my car and for some reason on my bedside table.
Soon, I think every surface in my home will have a happily applied coat of paint on it. If it wasn't just wrong to paint my cats I think I'd make one a nice shade of periwinkle and the other a deep chartreuse.
In all honesty I really enjoy painting, which I guess is why I am at the moment writing to you from a freshly painted bedroom.
I think paint is one of the fastest and cheapest way to completely change a space. My room which was a bright yet dusty pink has now turned the color of nicely weathered driftwood. Before you judge my previously pink room I'd like a chance to justify. The bedroom was the first room I painted after we bought our home, and after years of renting white walls I was ecstatic with all my color options. I could, in theory, paint my room what ever color I wanted,so I went with bright pink, and I loved it. I still love it, but as far as putting our home on the market goes a pink bedroom can put people off, allegedly. Since I'm alway up for a day of prepping, taping, priming, and painting I figured it was high time I chose a more subdued color for our room.

Please pay no attention to the hideous plastic blinds, or the pile of junk

At least no one can say that I'm afraid of color :)

Embarrassing color choices aside, I  am very happy with the new color and I cannot wait to show all of you.
Surely I cannot be the only one with whom has gone wild with possibility and painted something a bright happy color, right? Tell me all about to ease my shame, please : )

I will be back tomorrow with the first day of festivities for Lenae's blogged baby shower!
Hope to have all of you stop by for a visit.

Pinkalicious Peace!

5 things

For some reason the thought of telling all of you a few very random things about yours truly crossed my mind. I'm not sure why, I have a lot on my mind I guess. All morning Mason has insisted that we go back to bed and snuggle, I told him that after we take Orion to school we can certainly get back in bed. So now he asks me every 3 minutes if we can go "night-night?" I get the feeling I will not be getting much accomplished today, besides a whole lotta snuggle time.

1. I tuck my babies in several times each night, when they go to bed, when I go to bed and every time I get up (which is way too often). I sneak into their room to kiss each of them and make sure they are covered and snug. Sometimes, if the mood strikes me, I'll cuddle in next to one of them or smuggle one back to bed with jess and I. Someday all too soon they will not want to be close to their mommy so I'm here to soak up every chance I have before then.

2. I genuinely enjoy mowing my lawn, which really bothers my very proper elderly neighbor who thinks that lawn mowing is simply not a woman's job. Every time I'm out mowing my lawn I can see her scowling from her window at Jess, which is maybe the best part of the whole thing.

3. I've lost my wedding band. Now, I am pretty sure that it is lost somewhere in my house, but either way the guilt is killing me. My engagement ring is too large and won't stay on without my band, what kind of omen is that? Just looking at my naked finger makes me want to bust into tears.

4. My cat usually ends up eating just as much of my popcorn as I do. I'm not kidding she is a popcorn junkie and will do anything short of clawing your eyes out to get some. I enjoy sharing it with her as it's always better than eating alone. If you ever come to my house be sure to share with the cat, she's pretty scary.

5. For the first time in my life I am frightened to see what the year will bring. As of now jess has been referred to a neurosurgeon and an orthopedic surgeon. We expect he will undergo a major back surgery in the next year but really have no idea what to expect. Will we move? Will jess have surgery? Will we be able to sell our house if jess has surgery and we move? Really it's all to much for me to process, so I guess I'll do the only option available to me and wait patiently, ahem... cause I'm known for patience.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to go buy the paint for our bedroom redo today. After changing my mind a thousand times I've finally settled on this beauty

I'm going with hot spring stones. A nice warm grey that is a little tan at night

Here it is with my favorite inspiration, driftwood! The first photo is the true color but this is what it looks with my bedroom lamps on. What do you think?

Thanks for sticking around, kind of a strange long winded post huh?

Peace and a popcorn hoarding cat!

For now I've got to get these and a few other things boxed up and ready for their trip to D.C.!

Adventures in budget renovations

This time last year I was desperately trying to convince my husband to renovate our kitchen. Although our kitchen was crumbling around us we had zero extra money to do the major overhaul that our kitchen needed. For weeks I schemed, researched, and planned how we could make our kitchen livable on a tight budget. So for resale value and for my sanity Jess reluctantly agreed that we could slowly begin planning how we would revamp our kitchen. The next morning I removed all the cabinet doors, sanded and primed all the cabinets in the kitchen, but hey, at least I waited until he said yes!

When Jess got home from work that night he learned that the kitchen reno had begun.  let's just say that he was considerably less excited and optimistic about it than I was. Nevertheless, we had started down a long yet rewarding road. Here it is a year later and we are almost completely finished.
It had always been our dream to create our home with as many hand made items as possible. Our kitchen was our first dedicated project to our extreme diy goal. Now when I look at the almost finished project I am so proud that we stuck to our initial goal. which you can read all about here if you'd like. In all honesty the only aspect in which we deviated from our original plan was the budget. In the beginning we agreed to make our budget $500, which would basically only allow for cosmetic upgrades. Later Jess received a raise at work and we had a little more breathing room so we decided to expand our plans in a few important areas, like installing a dishwasher, that we just couldn't afford before.

Now I am happy to say that I am no longer ashamed of my kitchen. It is still a very small kitchen but it is at least a more efficient layout. I am sure the future owners will just come in and knock out the dividing walls and make it a much more open design, but that will be there 10-20k to spend, not mine. My kitchen is thoughtful, unique, handmade and most of all loved.

So do you wanna see how we did it all?

I have shown you my floor and my butcher-block counter top but admittedly I was not a great blogger then so just for fun I'm going to show you all over again over the next few weeks.

Today I want to show you how we made our kitchen lighting. My desire to hand-make all that I can really pushed this project. One day while grocery shopping I spotted some beautiful handmade vases in the floral department of Safeway.
The other shoppers gawked at me as I held the vases up to the light to see what they would look like. even the gal who works in the floral department approached me to tell me that they were vases, because apparently I looked like I needed informing. I bought a small candle votive and took it home to show jess.
After a bit of internet searching on how to drill a hole in glass we attempted it, and it worked great. the next day I went back to safeway to buy the larger vases, and they were marked down on clearance! It was meant to be!

First we drilled the holes with a special glass drill bit under running water, we did ours in the sink so it would contain the glass just in case it broke

Next we took a trip to the hardware store's electrical section. there we purchased the part that attaches to the ceiling (I think it's called a canopy) a socket, and some electrical wire. Then we headed over to the K&S stand and bought a few feet of brass tubing.

Now I'm not even going to pretend that I did the wiring or even know anything about that, cause I don't. Jess put the entire thing together. I spray painted the tubing and canopy black and epoxied the glass vase shade to the tubing. Jess went into the attic to wire them in and viola!

We made ourselves one of a kind kitchen lighting for wayyy less than we could ever have bought something similar. The best part is when someone new comes into the kitchen and asks where we got our beautiful pendants, I say Safeway, and they inevitably stare blankly at me until I explain it to them.

My small pendant fixture over the sink

the larger fixture over my antique wedgewood stove

I just adore the glow they give!

Heres the approxamate cost break down:
small vase-$9
2 Large vases- $ 16 each
1 Brass light canopy-$5
K&S brass tubing- $4 for each 9" stick
3 Light sockets-$ 4 each (we splurged for the good ones)
the epoxy and black spray paint we already had
= $70 for 2 very unique one of a kind light fixtures

Plus I like how masculine they seem and the way they give my old fashioned kitchen a modern twist!
I'm linking this up to the weekend wrap up party over at Tatertots & Jello
So hop on over there to check out all the other great projects.

Peace and pretty lighting!

another glamorous day

It's all high heels and manicures around here today...just kidding! As I mentioned a few weeks ago we are not only trying to get our house in market ready shape but we also aspire to live a more organized life in general. It's been a rough few weeks around here, forcing myself to take care of the projects that are...well, not at all fun.

This week we have drywalled and taped the garage and still have to paint it and add our wall of mega shelves, hopefully we will have that all finished by Sunday. I have also spent my week focused on our kitchen. Now that all of our actual renovation is complete in there, it is time to clean and re organize. Sure the outside of the cabinets look nice and tidy, until you open a door and see the wreckage of food and cooking utensils that have amassed in them over a year of renovations.
Holy filthy cabinet, Batman!

Plus I've been wanting to unpack my xmas gift from my very thoughtful mother-in-law, but needed to sit and go through all of my old pots and pans to see how much of it I can donate, which turned out to be almost all of them.
Thanks Jana!

So I started pulling everything out, deciding what to donate as I went

Then I cleaned and painted the insides of the cabinets a nice fresh white

I already felt much better, as long as I didn't turn around and see the mess around me!

Just look at the unnecessary junk I keep in my tiny kitchen. Those are bonsai pots on the floor! while I was cleaning I found a SAW in my cabinet (never mind how long I've been looking for that saw) how dangerous is   it to have a saw in a cabinet we reach into without looking!

Then I put everything back.Actually it is quite nice looking stuff when it's arranged in a clean cabinet

Oh, Ice cream maker, you're my only friend, and now that I have located you near the front I'll be more apt to put you to use!

Meanwhile in the garage... that's 60 year old drywall the builders hung. It was already on 2 walls but no one ever got around to taping or painting it...until we came along. We are finishing the pre-existing drywall and adding the rest. Drywalling is a lot easier than I thought

I can't wait to show you the finished garage, although I've been told I'll still never be able to park in it. We will hopefully be moving our washer and dryer out of our kitchen and into the garage next week. I know it's very European to have your laundry in the kitchen but I have never thought  much of it.

So there it is, in all it's luxuriousness! It may not be a glamorous week here at Casa de Cahill but at least it's a productive one.

Don't forget that we will be showering the always wonderful Lenae and her soon to be sweetness here at Lilliedale this weekend, I hope you can all stop by!

Peace and painted knuckles!

Doughnut Muffins

A few nights ago I was flipping channels on t.v. when I came across "the best thing I ever ate" show on Food Network. The truth be told I really don't care for this show but I watched in delicious amazement as one of the celebrity chefs described the Doughnut Muffins from The Downtown Bakery & Creamery in Healdsburg, Ca. My eyes transfixed on these tasty looking morsels I decided I must create my own, but in mini-muffin form. As I mentioned a few posts ago I am perennially looking for an easier and somewhat healthier way to make doughnuts at home.
Let me just tell you that these are better than any doughnut I have EVER had. While watching the show the host mentioned how the muffins are heavily flavored with nutmeg so with that in mind I started developing my recipe. I suppose a simple google search would turn up this recipe but I am always up for a challenge and wanted to see if I could replicate them myself.

Doughnut Muffins:
1 1/2 sticks butter
1 C.Sugar
2 eggs
3 c. All purpose flour (I use King Arthur brand and will NEVER use anything else!)
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. Baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. FRESH grated nutmeg
1 C. milk
1/8 C. buttermilk*
1 tsp. pure vanilla

For dipping:
1 stick melted butter
1 cup sugar
1 tbsp Cinnamon

* I make my own by adding about a tsp of vinegar to milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.

Pre-heat oven to 350

Cream butter and sugar in mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Add in 1 egg at a time just until it is incorporated.Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg in separate bowl.  In another bowl mix milk, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Here's where it gets confusing but stick with me it makes a big difference! With the mixer running on low speed alternate adding the milk mixture and the flour mixture to the creamed butter and sugar in thirds starting with the milk mixture and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until smooth but do not overmix, the batter should seem sorta dry and sticky.

Sticky muffin batter

Spoon the batter into greased muffin tins. I used my brand spankin' new mini-muffin tin, Thanks again Momma!
Bake the muffins until golden brown,  you want to bake them a little longer than you normally would so they do not crumble while you roll them in the sugar. Mine came out looking like cornbread muffins, if that helps. While they bake melt your butter in the microwave in a small bowl. Next mix sugar and cinnamon in another bowl

once the muffins are cool enough to pick up but still very warm you are ready to roll them. I let mine sit to cool for about 5 minutes. Dip a pastry brush in butter and brush it all over muffin. drop warm buttery muffin into sugar mixture and roll it around to coat completely. Transfer to large plate and continue brushing and rolling the tiny muffins. I like to toss them in sugar 3 at a time to minimize the mess.

Now is the best part grab yourself a hot cuppa coffee, or tea, and indulge! This recipe made about 48 tiny muffins but you could also use a standard size muffin tin and make about 24.

And just because I'm crazy and I already had the oven cranking I also whipped up some blueberry muffins with the fantastic organic blueberries I bought yesterday.

Now I'm off to deliver some warm doughnut muffins to Orion's school.

I'm linking this post up to the recipes section for the
Saturday Nite Special link up party

Peace help yourself to another!

let's get that in writing

Like many other people I'm starting out my year with a mile long list of things I want/need to do. Usually my ambition blows in like a storm and I have no trouble getting started on large, daunting projects. Well, that's just not the case with me right now. Currently I am finding myself in a very quiet reflective state. My usual winter creativity madness has sloughed away and left a bare and surprisingly sensitive persona. And I'm okay with this. If what I need right now is this cathartic interlude, then bring it on.
Luckily, I have a partner that is not only "okay" with my lack of ambition, but thinks it is absolutely necessary. He is the one that urges me to follow my own intuition and not feel guilty about not having folded laundry or a visible dining room table. Often he reassures me that all explosively creative people require inertia. While I'm not quite sure how I feel about being called explosively creative, I do appreciate that he sees me as a real artist.
Someday I aspire to have his unwaivering patience and devotion to me.

Peace stick with me, I'm getting there!

Addressing the topic

A few days ago I posted about wanting to do an up-cycling swap, and I have had a lot of people interested in participating. If you are planning on playing along please send me your address so I may pass it along to the person you'll be swapping with. Given the recent anthrax scare I think it's safe to say that anything having to do with a Tide detergent container should be off limits. If you are interested in participating but short on time you could certainly do a smaller project. This is more about recycling and making new friends than anything else, so don't stress and have fun.
My email is kanan454@gmail.com, for your own safety I ask that you send your address to my email rather than leaving it as a comment on my blog, which is open to public viewing.

Peace participate!

After Christmas sweets

Are you craving something sweet that won't make you feel guilty after the holidays? Then whip your self up a delicious batch of brown sugar body scrub. This super easy recipe may be adapted in pretty much any way, so customize and indulge!

Brown sugar body scrub-
2 cups light brown sugar
3/4 cup grapeseed oil, safflower oil, or olive oil  (I use grape seed oil for most of my beauty needs because it's lighter, cheaper and doesn't go rancid at room temp.)
1 tablespoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
5-6 finely ground cardamom pods (optional and expensive)

Mix ingredients in large bowl and transfer to clean container. I prefer to use glass canning jars but plastic tupperware might make more sense if you are using it in the shower and do not want to drop it.

You can decorate your jar and give it as a nice gift or keep it all for yourself and be the only one with deliciously exfoliated skin.

Pie Scented Peace!
